Fighter Wing Version 2.0: What's New?
The 2.0 upgrade includes following:
1. Faster performance across the board, thus making the game much more
responsive in Medium and High Resolution graphics modes.
2. Corrected VESA mode video problems for the Tseng Labs chipset, and the ATI
Xpressions, ATI Mach 64 and Diamond Stealth graphics cards.
Note: Diamond Viper owners please read FW Fact Sheet below for more
information.
3. Added options to reduce the amount of terrain detail and/or reduce the video
window size for optimum dogfighting performance. (Users may display actual
frame rate values on the screen in order to compare/contrast performance
under each of these display conditions.)
4. Corrected incompatibility problems with specific PCI local bus architectures
which caused slow game performance.
5. Added "virtual cockpit mode" which offers multiple views from the cockpit.
6. Improved NETBIOS network gameplay performance and added IPX network support.
7. Corrected performance problems with Modem gameplay.
8. Added an option to replace "in-flight" music with engine noise.
Note: If this option is desired, the user must be sure to reconfigure the
Music setting in the Setup program.

Fighter Wing uses a DOS extender to load the game. This extender can conflict
with MS-DOS's EMM386. It is recommended that you create a special boot disk
to run this program. The majority of problems with loading Fighter Wing can
be solved by creating a boot disk. The CD-ROM version has a make boot option
built onto the CD. Goto the MAKEBOOT directory on the CD and type MAKEBOOT.
To make a boot disk manually:
1. Place a new diskette into your A drive
2. At the DOS prompt, type
FORMAT A: /S
3. After the disk has been formatted, you will need to create the startup
files for the disk. You can create these files using the DOS Editor. The
following is the recommended configuration for your boot disk.
Config.sys:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=LOW
FILES=40
BUFFERS=40
STACKS=9,256
DEVICE=C:\<path>\<cd-rom drivers>
SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS /P /E:512
Autoexec.bat:
@ECHO OFF
C:\<path>\<mouse driver>
C:\<path>\MSCDEX.EXE ....<your settings>
C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE C /X
C:
CD\FWING
FWING
Once your boot disk has been created with these files, you will have to
start your computer with this disk in the A drive in order to run the game
properly.
COMMON ERRORS:
Error: EMM has detected error number xx
Answer: EMM will conflict with the DOS4GW extender. Create the boot disk
with the recommended startup files listed above.
Error: VESA support is not available
Answer: If you have the CD-ROM version, you can load UNIVESA from the CD-ROM
prior to running FWING. If you need this file, it can be downloaded from
our BBS (214) 702-8641.
Error: You see the opening sequence, but at the Choose Pilot Screen, your
screen is color is jumbled or your mouse leaves 'trails' that erase the
screen.
Answer: If you have the CD-ROM version, you can load UNIVESA from the CD-ROM
prior to running FWING. If you need this file, it can be downloaded from
our BBS (214) 702-8641.
Error: Computers using the Diamond Viper VLB card still have VESA problems.
Answer: The Diamond Viper VLB Card needs to load a special driver. To do this
you will need to run VPRMODE VESA in the directory that has your viper files,
most commonly, C:\VIPER
Error: You continue to get an error message stating that your system is
not VESA compatible.
Answer: Your video card is either not VESA compatible or UNIVESA is not able to
correctly identify your video card. Contact the manufacturer of your video card
for VESA driver.
MULTIPLAYER SCENARIOS:
Fighter Wing allows up to 16 players on a network and playing via modem or
serial cable. In order for this to properly work, you will need to have
different serial numbers, i.e. two copies of the program. Merit Studios
has the following multiuser discount.
Six Players Total - $50
Eleven Players Total - $75
Sixteen Players Total - $100
The following steps should help in setting up multiplayer scenarios
1. Each Player selects MultiPlayer Scenario
2. On a Network, one player selects HOST, the others select Non-Host. Via
Modem, the CALLING PLAYER is the NON HOST!!!! After these selections are
made, HOST will control the setup.
3. Host will select the MultiPlayer Scenario
4. Host will select TEAMS. (If needed, teams can be added) When teams
are selected correctly, they will appear at the top in GREEN, i.e. TEAM ONE
VS TEAM TWO
5. Host and Non-Host will receive the SELECT PILOT SCREEN. Individuals will
select a pilot and join a team.
6. All players will receive the MISSION DESCRIPTION SCREEN. Press OK when
finished reading this screen.
7. All players will receive the SELECT PLANES SCREEN. When player has
selected plane, press OK.
8. All players will receive the SELECT WEAPONS SCREEN. Select your loadout
and press OK.
9. Each player will then show PREPARING TERRAIN. After the program will
show the SELECT PILOT SCREEN and will prepare the players for the upcoming
game. When each player's name turns RED, the game will begin.
